Okay, so I finally got my hands on a new tarot deck. It’s been sitting there, all shiny and new, and I’ve been itching to start using it. But I didn’t want to just dive in. I figured there’s gotta be a proper way to get started, right?

First thing I did was to take out all the cards and give them a good look. I mean, really look at them. I flipped through each one, taking my time to notice the colors, the symbols, the little details in the artwork. And you know what? I even lit a candle and played some chill music in the background. It just felt right, setting the mood and all.
Getting Comfortable with the Cards
- Shuffling: This is a big one. I spent a good chunk of time just shuffling the deck. Over and over. I wanted the cards to feel comfortable in my hands, you know? Like an extension of myself.
- Getting to Know Them: I didn’t do any readings right away. Instead, I would pick a few cards at random each day. I would really study them, think about what they might mean, and how they might relate to each other.
- Keeping Them Close: I also made a point to keep the deck close by. I carried it around in my bag, I kept it on my nightstand. Just having it near me felt like it was helping us bond. And I did shuffle the deck anytime I got a chance. The purpose of doing this is to make the cards softer and move more easily against one another.
- Rubbing: I also did a somewhat scary thing. I rubbed the edge of the cards over the edge of a table. This could make the cards softer more quickly.
Cleansing and Charging
Now, I’m not sure if this is necessary, but it felt right to me. I wanted to cleanse the deck of any, like, lingering energy. So, I did a few things:
- Sunlight: I left the deck out in the sun for a few hours. I figured the sun’s energy would kind of purify it.
- Crystals: I also placed some of my favorite crystals on top of the deck overnight. I used amethyst and smoky quartz, ’cause I heard they’re good for cleansing. And, of course, I have to mention that charging under a full moon is great! I spread a cloth on the windowsill, spread out the deck, placed the deck’s crystal on top, and left them out overnight.
After all that, I finally felt ready to start doing some readings. And you know what? It felt great. Like I had really connected with the deck on a deeper level. It wasn’t just a bunch of pretty pictures anymore. It felt like a tool I could use to gain some insight, some guidance.
So yeah, that’s how I got started with my new tarot deck. It was a bit of a process, but it was totally worth it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some cards to shuffle.
