Classic tarot deck meanings: Learn the basics of this traditional tarot deck!

Alright, so I got this thing for tarot cards, you know, those mystical cards that are supposed to tell your future and stuff. I’ve always been a bit curious, and a bit skeptical, about the whole thing. But, hey, why not give it a try, right? So, I decided to dive in and see what this classic tarot deck is all about.

Getting Started

First things first, I needed a deck. I did some looking around and found that there are tons of different tarot decks out there, each with its own unique artwork and symbolism. But for a beginner like me, it seemed like the classic Rider-Waite deck was the way to go. It’s like the standard, the one everyone recommends.

Learning the Cards

Once I had my deck, it was time to actually learn what these cards mean. Man, there are 78 of them! I found a bunch of resources online, but honestly, it was a bit overwhelming at first. But, I started by just looking at the pictures and getting a feel for each card.

  • There are 22 Major Arcana cards, which are like the big, overarching themes in life. Think stuff like The Fool, The Lovers, Death, and The World.
  • Then there are 56 Minor Arcana cards, which are more about the day-to-day stuff. These are divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Each suit has cards numbered from Ace to Ten, plus four Court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King.

I decided to focus on one card a day. I’d pull it out, look at the picture, read a bit about its meaning, and then just kind of think about how it might relate to my life or what was going on around me.

Doing Readings

After a few weeks, I felt like I had a decent grasp of the basics. So, I started doing some simple readings for myself. I’d shuffle the deck, think about a question I had, and then draw a few cards. I wouldn’t take it too seriously, but it was fun to see what came up and how I could interpret the cards based on what I’d learned.

I even tried doing readings for a couple of friends. They were curious, and it was a good way for me to practice. We’d sit down, I’d let them shuffle the deck, and then we’d go through the cards together, talking about what they might mean.

Still Learning

Honestly, I’m still very much a beginner. There’s so much to learn about tarot, and I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface. But it’s been a fun and interesting journey so far. I’m not sure I believe that the cards can predict the future or anything, but I do think they can be a cool tool for self-reflection and maybe even sparking some interesting conversations.

I’m planning to keep practicing and learning more about the different spreads and techniques for reading the cards. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll even be good enough to do readings for strangers! But for now, I’m just enjoying the process and seeing where this tarot adventure takes me.
