My Encounter with 4964

Alright, let’s talk about this 4964 thing. It wasn’t like a lightning bolt or anything dramatic. It just started showing up. You know how sometimes you notice the same car model everywhere once you start thinking about it? It was kinda like that with 4964.

First, it was the time on the microwave, 4:96, oh wait, that’s not right, must have been 4:09 or something, maybe I misread? But then later, I’d see it pop up again. Maybe part of a phone number on a truck, or the last four digits on a receipt – $49.64. It happened enough times over a couple of weeks that I actually stopped and thought, “Huh, that’s weird.”

I’m not usually one for signs and wonders, pretty grounded usually. But curiosity got the better of me. So, I did what most people do these days, poked around online a bit. Didn’t go deep into mystical stuff, just wanted to see if this number combination meant anything to anyone.

Found some general ideas floating around. Stuff about hard work, stability, maybe needing to finish things up before starting new ones, trusting your gut. Pretty broad strokes, honestly. Could apply to almost anything, right?

But here’s the thing, I had this old project I’d started in the garage ages ago. A bookshelf build. Got halfway done, then life happened, and it just sat there collecting dust. Every time I saw it, I felt a little bit guilty, a little bit annoyed with myself.

So, connecting it to that idea of ‘finishing things up’, I thought, “Okay, challenge accepted.” I decided to take that general idea I read about and actually apply it. See what happens. My practical experiment, if you will.

  • Step 1: Made a conscious decision to stop ignoring the half-finished bookshelf.
  • Step 2: Scheduled actual time on my calendar for the next two weekends. Like, blocked it out – “Work on Shelf”.
  • Step 3: Got the materials out, dusted everything off, figured out where I’d left off.
  • Step 4: Put in the hours. It wasn’t smooth sailing. Had to re-cut a piece I messed up earlier. Ran out of screws. The usual DIY headaches.
  • Step 5: Kept going. Every time I felt like quitting, I remembered seeing that number, 4964, and the idea of persistence and finishing the job. Sounds silly, maybe, but it gave me a little nudge.

Finally got the thing finished. Sanded, stained, the whole nine yards. It looked pretty decent, actually.

Now, did angels sing? Did I suddenly get a windfall? Nope. But here’s what did happen. Getting that nagging project done cleared up a surprising amount of mental space. Felt less cluttered in my head. And seeing the finished shelf every day was a solid reminder that yeah, sticking with something actually yields results.

Maybe a week after I finished it, my neighbor, who saw me working on it, asked if I could build some simple raised garden beds for him. Paid job. Nothing huge, but it came directly from me finally finishing that shelf project.

So, for me, the whole 4964 experience wasn’t about magic numbers from the sky. It was about noticing a pattern, getting curious, finding a general idea that resonated with something I knew I needed to do anyway, and then using it as a mental hook to actually do the work. The number was just the catalyst, the real change came from the action I took.
