How to interpret cups tarot cards simply? Easy tips for beginners reading about feelings and connections.

Alright, so I decided to knuckle down and spend some real time with the Cups suit from my tarot deck today. Been feeling a bit all over the place emotionally, figured it was time to actually sit with those cards instead of just thinking about them.

First thing, I dug out my go-to deck. It’s worn, edges are soft, feels right in my hands. None of that glossy new card stiffness. Found a quiet corner, cleared the table. Then I started shuffling. Not fancy shuffling, just the regular, messy kind. Overhand, cutting the deck a few times. Did that for a good few minutes, just trying to get my head into it and let the day’s noise settle down.

Getting Started with the Cups

I decided not to do a formal spread. Nah, wanted to just meet the cards one by one. So, I just fanned them out and started pulling, focusing only on the Cups.

Pulled the Ace of Cups first. You know the one, big hand, cloud, overflowing cup. My first thought wasn’t ‘new emotional beginning!’ like the books say. It was more like, ‘Okay, that’s a lot.’ Almost too much, that feeling of being overwhelmed by potential. Felt kinda intense, honestly.

Then I spent some time with the Two of Cups. The exchange, the connection. Yeah, okay, partnership. But looking at the card today, it felt… tentative. Like, it’s a nice idea, but there’s work involved. It’s not just handed to you.

Got to the Five of Cups. Ah, this guy. Always a bit of a downer. Head down, cloak on, ignoring the full cups behind him. My gut reaction? ‘Stop moping!’ Felt a bit impatient with him today. We all have regrets, sure, but standing there staring at the spilled stuff doesn’t fix anything. Really made me think about some stuff I’d been dwelling on.

Going Deeper

I kept going through them. The Pages, Knights, Queen, King. Tried to see them as real people, or at least real aspects of emotion.

  • The Page of Cups felt kinda naive, dreamy. Like someone starting out, maybe a bit too trusting.
  • The Knight of Cups… charming, yeah, but maybe a bit flaky? Following his heart, sure, but where’s it leading?
  • The Queen felt more grounded. Holding her cup, looking at it. Seemed like she understood her emotions, wasn’t swept away by them.
  • The King, though. He felt a bit distant. Like he’s got control, maybe too much control? Sitting on his throne in the middle of the water, but not really in it.

The numbered cards continued the story. The joy of the Three, the boredom in the Four, the nostalgia trip with the Six. The Seven of Cups really hit – all those choices, fantasies, illusions. Felt very relevant, that sense of ‘what if’ and getting lost in possibilities instead of doing something.

Then came the Nine of Cups. The ‘wish’ card. Guy looks pretty pleased with himself. My take today? Smug. Looked a bit too self-satisfied, like he’s enjoying his stash but maybe not sharing.

Finished with the Ten of Cups. The happy family, the rainbow. It’s the ideal, right? But looking at it… it felt almost like a picture, not reality. Nice goal, maybe, but life’s usually messier than that perfect scene.

Wrapping Up

So I spent maybe an hour, just looking, thinking, feeling my way through the suit. Didn’t look up meanings, just went with my gut reactions and whatever popped into my head. Some cards felt different than usual. Some felt exactly the same. It’s weird how that happens.

Putting them all back together, the whole suit felt like… well, life. Ups and downs, connections and losses, dreams and reality checks. It’s all in there. Watery, flowing, sometimes murky, sometimes clear.

Anyway, that was my practice for today. Just spending time with the cards, letting them talk, seeing what came up. Better than just reading about tarot online, that’s for sure. Actually doing it, that’s where the real stuff happens. Felt good to just connect with the deck again like that.
