The Visconti Tarot Deck: History and Symbolism Explained

Okay, so yesterday I finally unboxed my new Visconti Tarot deck. Been eyeing it for ages, and it’s even prettier in person.

First thing I did, right outta the box, was just shuffle the heck outta the cards. Gotta get my energy all mixed in, you know? I’m not usually super fussy about cleansing rituals, but these felt special, so I lit some incense – sandalwood, my go-to – and let the smoke kinda envelop the deck for a few minutes.

Next up: the guidebook. I usually skim these at first, but the Visconti deck is kinda historical, so I figured it’d be smart to actually read a bit. Turns out, the illustrations are based on real folks from the Milanese court back in the 1400s! Cool, right?

Trying out a simple reading

  • Started with a basic three-card spread: Past, Present, Future.
  • Pulled the Ten of Swords for the Past. Ouch. Guidebook says it represents endings, hitting rock bottom. Yeah, sounds about right – dealt with some major work drama last month.
  • Present card was the Queen of Pentacles. Hmm, nurturing, practical, grounded. Okay, I can vibe with that. Been focusing on getting my finances in order lately.
  • Future? The Lovers. Whoa! Could mean a romantic thing, but also big decisions, choices. Interesting…

Gotta say, even with just a simple spread, the Visconti deck felt… powerful. The images are so rich and detailed, it really got me thinking. Not just about the cards themselves, but about my own life and how the symbols connected.

Things I noticed about the deck itself:

  • The cardstock is THICK. Like, seriously sturdy. Should hold up well over time.
  • The gold foil details are gorgeous. Catch the light beautifully.
  • The artwork is stunning. So much attention to detail in the costumes and expressions.
  • They are bigger than my other deck.

Overall, I’m super happy with my Visconti Tarot deck. Still getting to know it, but I can already tell it’s going to be a valuable tool for self-reflection and, you know, maybe even a little bit of future-telling. Gonna keep practicing and experimenting with different spreads. Stay tuned for more updates as I get deeper into the deck!
