What should you know before getting your monthly tarot reading? Prepare for helpful guidance ahead.

Okay, so the beginning of the month rolled around again, and you know what that means for me – time to sit down and pull some cards. It’s become a bit of a ritual, helps me kinda set the tone, you know?

Getting Started

First things first, I grab my go-to tarot deck. It’s worn in, feels right in my hands. None of that stiff, new card feeling. I find my usual spot, usually just the corner of my desk once I clear some junk off it. Needs to be quiet-ish, or at least where I won’t be immediately interrupted. Sometimes I light some incense, sometimes not. Depends on the mood, really. No hard rules here.

Shuffling and Drawing

Then comes the shuffling. I shuffle them good, maybe for a few minutes, just thinking loosely about the month ahead. What energy am I bringing in? What should I maybe keep an eye out for? Just general thoughts, nothing too specific.

  • I shuffle until it feels ‘done’. Hard to explain, it just feels right.
  • Then I cut the deck into three piles, just using my left hand. Habit, I guess.
  • Stack ’em back together in a different order.

After that, I fan the cards out. I usually pull three cards for a monthly outlook. Just three. Keep it simple, otherwise my brain gets overloaded trying to connect like ten different things. I draw them one by one.

Looking and Noting Down

I lay the three cards out in front of me. Left to right. First, I just look at them. What jumps out? Any immediate feeling or reaction? Sometimes it’s super clear, other times it’s like, “Huh? What’s that doing there?”

This part’s important for me: I don’t immediately jump to the guidebook. I try to see what I think first, based on the pictures and my own gut feeling. What story do these three cards tell together for the coming weeks?

Maybe the first card feels like the main theme, the second a hurdle or something needing attention, and the third some kind of guidance or likely outcome if I follow a certain path. It changes month to month how I interpret the positions, honestly.

Once I’ve sat with them for a bit, I grab my notebook. It’s nothing fancy, just a plain notebook. I write down the date, the cards I pulled, and my initial thoughts. Just bullet points or a few sentences. Sometimes I sketch the cards badly. Helps me remember.

Wrapping Up

And… that’s pretty much it. I gather the cards, give ’em another shuffle just to reset, and put them back in their box or bag. The notebook stays on my desk for a while. I might glance back at it during the month if something happens that makes me think of the reading. It’s not about predicting the future exactly, more like getting a nudge or a theme to keep in mind. Helps me reflect, I suppose. Done and dusted until next month.
