Okay, so I’ve been wanting to mess around with creating tarot cards for a while, specifically in that cool Art Nouveau style. You know, the one with the flowing lines, the floral motifs, and that whole dreamy, vintage vibe? Yeah, that’s the stuff.
Getting Started
First, I gathered a bunch of references. I mean, a lot. I spent hours just scrolling through images of Alphonse Mucha’s work, old posters, and other Art Nouveau illustrations. Gotta get that inspiration flowing, right?
Then, I thought about which tarot card I wanted to start with. The Fool? The Lovers? Nah, I decided to go with The High Priestess. Seemed like a good fit for the mystical, ethereal feel I was aiming for.
The Design Process
- I started with rough sketches, just getting the basic composition down on paper. Lots of erasing and redrawing, trying to figure out the pose, the drapery, all that jazz.
- Next, I refined the lines. This is where that Art Nouveau influence really comes in. I made flowing lines that have a mind of their own.
- Time for color! I wanted a palette that felt both mystical and elegant, so I went with lots of blues, purples, and golds. And, since i was making it digitally, it’s very easy to change the color multiple times.
- I added details. all those little flourishes that really make the Art Nouveau style pop. Floral patterns, intricate borders, that kind of thing.
- Finally, I added the last touch. Adding the card’s name and number.
The Final Result
After many hours of work, I finally finished it. It’s not perfect, of course, but it’s mine, and I’m pretty darn proud of it. It’s got that dreamy, vintage vibe I was going for, and it definitely feels like it belongs in an Art Nouveau tarot deck.
This was a lot of fun, and it definitely scratched that creative itch I’ve been having. I can’t wait to create my entire deck!
