Stuck thinking of tarot card questions? Check out this easy list for your next reading session.

Okay, so let’s talk about figuring out tarot card questions. When I first got my hands on a deck, I was all over the place. Seriously, I had no clue what I was doing with the questions part. My readings felt flat, kinda pointless sometimes.

I remember I started out asking really simple stuff, mostly yes/no things. You know, like “Will I get that job?” or “Is this person the right one for me?”. Big mistake. The cards would come out, and honestly, the answers felt like mud. Sometimes they seemed to contradict each other, sometimes they just made zero sense for a simple yes or no. It got frustrating fast. I felt like I was just flipping cards for no good reason.

It wasn’t working. I realized pretty quick that the deck wasn’t a magic 8-ball. Asking it to predict the future like that just led to confusion, or worse, anxiety waiting for something specific to happen or not happen. It felt passive, like I had no control.

So, I had to switch things up. I started experimenting. It wasn’t like I read a fancy manual, mostly just trial and error during my own readings. I thought, okay, if predicting doesn’t work, what else is there?

Figuring Out What Works

I started focusing less on fortune-telling and more on… well, me. My perspective, my actions, my understanding. This was the big shift.

  • I stopped asking “Will X happen?”. Instead, I started trying things like “What do I need to understand about situation X?” or “How can I best navigate situation X?”. See the difference? It puts the focus back on what I can actually do or understand.
  • I learned to keep questions open-ended. Instead of “Is this the right path?”, I’d ask “What are the potential benefits and challenges of this path for my growth?”. This gave the cards so much more room to talk, to show different angles.
  • Making it personal was key. Instead of “What does he think of me?”, which is kinda trying to read someone else’s mind (and didn’t work well anyway), I turned it inward: “What role am I playing in this dynamic?” or “What do I need to focus on within myself regarding this relationship?”.
  • Sometimes I had huge, overwhelming questions. Like, “What’s my life purpose?!”. Yeah, good luck getting a clear answer on that in one go. I figured out I had to break those down. I started asking smaller, more manageable things like, “What‘s one step I can take this week to feel more aligned?” or “Where should I focus my energy right now for personal growth?”.

My Process Now

So now, before I even shuffle, I spend a bit of time thinking about the question. I might even write down a few versions of it. I read them out loud. I try to feel which one resonates the most, which one feels empowering rather than passive. It’s gotta be a question that opens doors in my mind, not one that’s looking for a locked-in answer.

Getting the question right changed everything. Suddenly, the readings started making sense. They felt like genuine guidance, like insights I could actually use in my life. It wasn’t about predicting anymore, but about understanding myself and my situation better. The cards became a tool for reflection, not just fortune-telling.

Honestly, learning to ask good questions took practice, and I still tweak my approach sometimes. It’s maybe the most important part of reading the cards, I think. Garbage question in, garbage answer out, you know? Getting the question right upfront makes the whole process way more valuable.
